Belpatra should not be broken on this day-
According to the scriptures, apart from Chaturthi, Ashtami, Navami, Chaturdashi and Amavasya dates, it should not be broken at the time of Sankranti and on Mondays. According to Skanda Purana, if you are not getting Bel leaves, then you can wash and re-use the leaves offered in Shivling.
Do not break bel leaves like this-
Never break the belpatra along with the twig. Rather, bel leaves should be plucked selectively, so that the tree is not harmed. Along with this, before and after plucking the belpatra, one should bow down to the tree.
Never offer Bel leaves in the opposite direction
Always offer the inverted Belpatra to Lord Shiva by touching the side towards the smooth surface. Always offer Belpatra with the help of ring finger, thumb and middle finger. Along with offering Bilva leaves to Shiva, definitely offer a stream of water.
Bel leaves should not be chopped-
Belpatra should not have a chakra and a thunderbolt. Try not to cut the vine leaves. It is said that Belpatra should not have more stripes. It is considered fragmented for worship.
This type of Bel leaves are considered to be the best-
Belpatras range from 3 to 11 parties. The more letters they are, the better they are considered.
One should not neglect or disrespect the Bel leaves offered by others on Shivling. Many people have a habit that they remove others to offer their Bel leaves. According to the Puranas, this should not be done at all.
Why do we offer three-leaf Belpatra?
There is a deep connection between Lord Shiva and the number three. You can also see its relation with the three horizontal lines of ashes on the forehead, Trinetra, Trishul etc. According to the Puranas, Belpatra is considered a symbol of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh.
