new Delhi. The government on Monday appointed Madhavi Puri Buch, a former member of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), as the chairman of SEBI. This is the first time that a woman will head the capital markets regulator. He replaces Ajay Tyagi, whose five-year term has come to an end. Sources said the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Buch’s appointment for an initial period of three years.
Who is Madhavi Puri Buch
Madhavi Puri Buch has an experience of more than 20 years in the Financial Services sector. He holds a degree in Management from IIM Ahmedabad. She has been the MD and CEO of ICICI Securities in the stock brokerage business. He has also held key positions at the New Development Bank in Shanghai and Greater Pacific Capital in Singapore.
Applications were invited in the month of October
The Finance Ministry had invited applications for the post of Chairman of SEBI in the month of October itself and the last date for submission of this application was December 6. On 22 February, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said that the short listing for this post is yet to be done. As part of the process of appointment of regulators, the Financial Sector Regulatory Appointments Search Committee, headed by the Cabinet Secretary, conducts short listing of candidates.
