League career – Francis Joseph.
Joseph, a London native from Kilburn, started his professional career with Wimbledon in 1980. In a home game against Darlington, he was a substitute and scored on his Football League debut.
[1] After earning a regular spot in Wimbledon’s first squad, Joseph was chosen as the team’s “Player of the Year” at the conclusion of his rookie campaign.
[1] Joseph moved to Brentford in the summer of 1982 for £40,000 after spending time on loan with Honka and JYP 77 in Finland.
He scored 50 goals in his first two seasons at Griffin Park before breaking his leg in September 1984 and sustaining a second injury in the second match of his comeback the following year. [3]
Joseph never fully recovered from his injuries, which occurred late in the 1985–86 campaign.
Dave Bassett, the manager of Sheffield United at the time, acquired Joseph on a free transfer from Wimbledon in July 1988. [1]
Joseph once more got off to a strong start, scoring on United’s league debut against his previous team Reading in August 1988, but he got hurt in the course of the match.
[1] As United was promoted from Division Three, Joseph was only occasionally deployed and was never able to reestablish a regular spot in the first squad.
Following his departure from United, he played for a number of teams in quick succession, including Crewe Alexandra, Fulham, Racing Ghent in Belgium, Tampa Bay Rowdies in the United States, and Barnet. Gillingham, who paid £5,000 for his services in March 1989, was the next club he played for.[1
Non-League career.
After leaving Barnet, Joseph moved around to a number of non-League football clubs, including Slough Town, Wokingham Town, Leatherhead, Dulwich Hamlet, Chertsey Town, Walton & Hersham, and Chesham.
In November 1995, he returned to Chertsey Town to take the position of player coach. After playing for Wealdstone as a teenager, Joseph later took the position of coach there.
