Anthony Wameli, head of the National Unity Platform (NUP) legal department, passed away in 2021 after being admitted to hospital.
The death of Anthony Wameli was revealed by NUP leader Bobi Wine alias Robert Kyakulani on Wednesday afternoon. The statement said:
“A very sad day! Just learned about the untimely death of our beloved brother and head of our legal team, Comrade Wameli Anthony, who was admitted from the US for treatment. Details will be communicated in due course. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” says Gyakulani.
Wameli was taken to St Anthony’s Medical Center in Kasangati, Wakiso District in 2021 as a result of stomach related problems.
At the time his wife, Olive Wameli, said the lawyer was unable to speak. A few weeks later in June 2021 the lawyer was flown out of the country to Boston Medical Center in Massachusetts, USA.
Who is Anthony Wameli?
Anthony Wameli is a leading human rights lawyer. He served as the head of the legal department of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and was a former candidate for the Namicindwa County MP.
A pastor and human rights lawyer at Ebenezer Christian Fellowship in Kanyanya, Mr. Wameli rose to prominence in 2017 when he took on the case of defendants accused of murdering former police spokesman Andrew Felix Kaweesi.
In court, Wameli defended several NUP supporters and other civilians, including former ADF rebel leader Jamilu Mukulu, suspects in the murder of AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi and suspects in the attempted assassination of General Katumba Wamala. .
Due to legal maneuvers, the human rights lawyer was selected by the Uganda Law Society as the Criminal Defense Lawyer of the Year in September 2021.
He founded and served as Managing Partner of Wameli and Company Advocates.
His law firm, Kampala celebrity Charles Olim, commonly known as Sibaba, and his wife, Shamila Nkiyemba, have been charged with aggravated robbery and money laundering at the Makindye Magistrate’s Court.
He is a member of Wameli & Co. He is the founder and managing partner of Lawyers, which has grown to over 300 lawyers and now has eight lawyers.
He has represented suspects facing terrorism charges in a legal career spanning more than ten years.
Before leaving, he served as a Grade I Magistrate in the Chief Magistrate’s Court, Nagasongola for nearly three years.
Cause of death of Anthony Wameli
Geoffrey Duryamusima, a close friend of Wameli, later told reporters that Wameli was suffering from severe stomach ulcers, which may have contributed to his worsening condition.
A few weeks later he was sent to Kampala and then to Boston Medical Center in Massachusetts, where he was reportedly diagnosed with a fourth colon cancer. His cancer had spread to his lungs and lymph nodes.
He died on February 8, 2023 after battling cancer for about 2 years. Tributes poured in online after news of his death spread.
